# Explore Salesforce Schema

> List objects in the org, or inspect one object's fields, picklist choices, and relationships.

`salesforce_explore_schema`

Inspect the org data model. With no `object`, it lists queryable objects (common CRM objects first, then custom). With an `object` (label or API name), it returns an overview, fields, picklist choices, or relationships.

Use this **before writing** records, or when someone asks what Salesforce tracks. Do not use it to find records — that is [`salesforce_find_records_smart`](/connectors/Salesforce/find-records-smart).

## Parameters

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |

| `object` | string | No | Object label (`Opportunity`) or API name (`Invoice__c`). Omit to list objects. |
| `focus` | `"overview"` \| `"fields"` \| `"choices"` \| `"relationships"` | No | What to return for one object. Default: `"overview"`. Ignored when listing objects. |
| `name_contains` | string | No | Filter objects (listing) or fields by a substring of the label or API name. |
| `record_type` | string | No | Record type name or developer name to scope picklist values. Default: the user's default record type. |
| `limit` | number (1–100) | No | Page size. Default: `20`. |
| `start` | number | No | Zero-based offset for the object or field list. Default: `0`. |
| `response_format` | `"markdown"` \| `"json"` | No | Default: `"markdown"`. |

## Returns

* **Object list:** labels, API names, whether the object is custom / queryable.
* **Overview:** key fields, required-on-create fields, record types.
* **Fields:** API name, label, type, createable / updateable / required.
* **Choices:** picklist values for the selected record type.
* **Relationships:** parents and child lists (for follow-up overviews).

API names are included in the structured result.
